The National Insurance Institute pays a paternity allowance to a father who stopped working and took a birth and parenthood leave period. Allowances are aimed at compensating the father for the loss of wages or income during the leave he took to care for his child.
A father may leave for a birth and parenthood period together with her spouse or to replace her for a share of that period. The days of birth and parenthood period the father spends are deducted from those to which the mother is entitled.
